were good, but some were cruel and not liked. Some of the artists became famous for their work and some did not. During the Renaissance, Milan was the place to be. Art was an outstanding thing during this period. There was tons of artists who sculpted the
most beautiful things, gave buildings a unique touch, and brought color where it was needed.
One of the most famous artists of Milan was Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci is still well-known today. Some of his most famous paintings were those such as The Last Supper and his masterpiece, The Mona Lisa. Da Vinci worked in Rome on a project and a workshop for the pope from 1513 to 1516. Leonardo was paralyzed in his right arm. He died on May 2, 1519. Leonardo Da Vinci was without a doubt, a Renaissance man.

er well-known artist in Milan was Michelangelo. He worked on many sculptures in Milan. He painted the Sistine Chapel which was not in Milan but the people of Milan knew about it and were proud of their well-known artist. Michelangelo was also an amazing architect. He had planned the architecture for many buildings. Later, Michelangelo died. We still remember him today, as he was a great artist and a true Renaissance man.
During this period of great discoveries and art, the rulers were good with an occasional bad. The first ruling family of this time was the Visconti family. The family ruled from 1277-1477 in Milan. It is believed that the term “viscount”, meaning a British nobleman of a high ranking, came from this dynasty. Some of the rulers in this family included Ottone Visconti, Azzone Visconti, Giovanni, and Lucchino Visconti. The most powerful leader of this family was Gian Galeazzo. He had made many things such as the Cathedral of Milan, the University and Library of Pavia, and the bridge across Ticino. He was a great and noble leader.
The next family up for the throne was the Sforza family. The first ruler of this dynasty was Francesco Sforza, the son-in-law of the last ruling Visconti. Other rulers were Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Gian Galeazzo Sforza, and Ludivico. Ludivico was the greediest ruler Milan had ever had. Although he was a bad ruler he introduced new things such as the irrigation canal. He was later assassinated. The Sforza had a somewhat successful rule.
The Renaissance was a period of new discoveries. These people were the ones who
encouraged and brought new ideas upon the city of Milan.
